Nomination:

Ms. Donica Beckett is a first year graduate student in the Master of Education in Health Promotion degree program in the School of Public Health. Since enrolling in the program, Ms. Beckett has become involved in raising the awareness of HIV/AIDS among students, particularly students of color, at UNLV. For World AIDS Day on December 1, 2007, she along with staff member at UNLV coordinated a movie showing and discussion about HIV. As a member of the Black Graduate Students Association, Ms. Beckett was a co-coordinator of activities sponsored by the organization for Black History Month in February 2008. During this month, she invited Dr. Melva Thompson-Robinson from the UNLV School of Public Health to talk with Black graduate students and others about HIV/AIDS in the African American community in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This event was well attended and covered by the Rebel Yell, student newspaper. Many of the students in attendance were appreciative of the opportunity to be able to talk openly about issues related to HIV/AIDS in their community. Ms. Beckett also works with the Southern Nevada Health District-Office of AIDS and the Community Planning Group of Southern Nevada to plan coordinated HIV prevention activities for the entire county and state. She is also identifying and reviewing HIV/AIDS materials that specifically target the African American community to determine their readability and appropriateness for this population. She hopes to be able to present the results of this effort at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in October 2008. Ms. Beckett has show true leadership in raising the awareness of UNLV students, particularly African American students, as well as the entire community regarding HIV/AIDS and the associated issues. She will truly make an impact in this area before graduating from UNLV.
